ABOUT US
Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust
Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust is an iwi, church, and community-led charitable organisation committed to environmental restoration within the Ngāti Hauā rohe.
Guided by a Mātauranga Māori approach, we deliver Iwi-based and community-based projects that restore the mauri of our rivers and whenua, while growing the capability and wellbeing of our people.
Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust aims to uphold the whakapapa of our whenua through eco-sourcing practices - each plant returned to the whenua strengthens the identity, resilience, and intergenerational connection of mana whenua.

OUR HISTORY
The History of
Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust
Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust was established over 20 years ago by Ngāti Hauā kaumātua from our five marae to bring iwi, church, and community together. The urge to keep ahikaa centered locally through employment, to ensure we maintain our Marae obligations. Their vision was clear: create meaningful work, restore the environment, and strengthen the hauora of Ngāti Hauā.
In 2012, the Trust re-emerged with a guiding principle:
“Tiaki manaakitia te tangata, Tiaki manaakitia te Taiao”
(Looking after our people, looking after the environment)
As a flax-roots organisation, the Trust began with a passion to make a difference within the Ngāti Hauā rohe - growing people through growing plants.
Today, Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust creates employment and grows kaitiaki through our native plant nurseries and environmental restoration operations. We lead in Mātauranga Māori-based restoration, revitalisation, and enhancement of culturally significant catchments that feed our tupuna awa - Topehaehae, Piako, and Waikato.
